Question

Jesus heals a man born blind

John 9:1-41

Key Verse: 9:5

  1. What did Jesus’ disciples ask him when they saw the man who had been born blind (1,2)? What did they probably think causes human suffering? At that time how might the condition of their spirit have been like?

  2. For what good purpose did Jesus say this man was born with blindness (3)? How might we explain the meaning of ‘the work of God’?

  3. Why did Jesus tell his disciples that they had to do the work of God (4) How is Jesus the light of the world (5)?

  4. What did Jesus actually do to heal the blind man (6,7a)? What can we learn here from how Jesus worked? What kind of obedience did Jesus need from the blindman, and why might he have required it in order to heal his blindness (7b)?

  5. What troubles did the blind man go through after his eyes had been opened by Jesus? Nevertheless, who did he confess Jesus to be (13-17)? Why did the Pharisees try to conceal the fact that Jesus opened the man’s eyes, rather than believe it, and why didn’t the man’s parents confess the truth (18-23)?

  6. What did the former blind man testify to the Pharisees when they tried to force him to claim Jesus was a sinner (24,25)? What did he further testify about Jesus (26-33) Think about the importance here of holding on firmly to even one act of Jesus’ grace to us.

  7. Because of this, what other trouble did he receive (34)? How did Jesus help the man after he had been thrown out (35-38)? Who did Jesus call the blind, and whom did he call those who see (39-41)?
