Lesson 25

JESUS, THE TRUE VINE

John 15:1-27

Key Verse: 15:5

  1. What is the relationship between God, Jesus, and his disciples in this metaphor? (1,5a) What does ‘the true vine’ mean? What does the gardener do to the branch bears no fruit, and the branch that does bear fruit? (2) What does it mean to cut and prune? What is the fruit God wants?

  2. In what way had the disciples already become clean? (3) (Jn 17:17) If a disciple is already clean, what must they continue to do? (4) What happens to branches that become disconnected from the vine? (4b,5b,6) How can we remain in Jesus the vine? (7; Col 2:6,7; Jn 8:31)

  3. What privilege does Jesus grant us when we remain in him? (7) How can we glorify God and show ourselves to be Jesus’ disciples? (8) Why is fruit-bearing so important? (Ge 1:28; Mt 7:16a)

  4. What did Jesus assure his disciples of? (9) How could they remain in Jesus’ love? (10) Why did Jesus tell them this? (11)

  5. What command did Jesus give them? (12) Why is the greatest love of all to lay down one’s life for one’s friends? (13) How can we become Jesus’ friends and what privilege can we enjoy as his friends? (14,15) How do we become Jesus’ disciples? (16a) Even though we are weak, how can we bear fruit? (16b,17)

  6. How would the world treat Jesus’ disciples? (18,19,21-25) Why would the world hate the disciples? If the world hates us, what words should we remember? (20) In times of persecution, what should we do? (26,27)
