John’s Gospel Lesson 26
WHEN THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH COMES
John 16:1-33
Key verse 16:13
1. To what does ‘all this’ refer? (See 15:18-27) What did Jesus predict about the future? (1-4) Why did Jesus tell his disciples ‘all this’? (1,4)
2. Where was Jesus going? (5) Why were the disciples’ hearts filled with grief? (6) In what respect was Jesus’ departure good for the disciples? (7)
3. Read verses 8-11. What does the Holy Spirit convict the world of? What is the greatest sin? (9) How does his going to the Father reveal righteousness? (10) Why does the prince of this world stand condemned? (11; Jn 12:31;14:30) What does the Holy Spirit’s acts of conviction mean to us as we serve the gospel work?
4. Why couldn’t the disciples bear all that Jesus wanted to say to them? (12) When the Spirit of Truth came, what does he do? (13-15) Why do you think Jesus revealed to them the work of the Holy Spirit in such detail?
5. What did Jesus mean when he said, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me”? (16-19) Why does he compare his imminent
departure to childbirth? What will be the cause of their grief? of their joy? (20-22)
6. In whose name would the disciples pray directly to God? (23,24) Why would God himself answer their prayers? (25-27) How important was prayer for the disciples to carry out their mission on their own?
7. What did Jesus clearly tell the disciples? (28.29) What did the disciples come to believe at last? (30,31) What time had come for Jesus, and why was he not alone? (32) How did Jesus equip them to meet the coming difficulties? What was Jesus’ personal faith and assurance? What is our assurance of victory?
