  1. Jacob and Esau (25:22-34; 26:34,35; 2,6-8)

  1. What was God’s will for Jacob even from his mother’s womb (25:23)? What was God’s plan in this? (Ro 9:10-13) Why did God choose Jacob? Why were Esau and Jacob so named, and how do their characters differ (24-27)?

  2. What did Jacob want, and what did he do to get it (29-33)? Why would he go so far to get the birthright? Unlike Jacob, how did Esau regard the birthright (34)? (Heb 12:16,17) Whom did Jacob and Esau marry, and what does this reveal about their respective values (26:34,35; 28:2,6-8)? In chapter 27 what did Jacob finally gain?

  1. The God of Bethel (28:1-5, 10-22)

  1. What blessing did Jacob receive from his father, and what request was made, when he left for Paddan Aram (1-5)? Where did he stop for the night, and what wondrous things did he witness in a dream (10-12)? What did the vision mean? What did God promise Jacob (13-15)? What do these promises show about God? What did Jacob do after he woke up (16-19)?

  2. What did Jacob vow before God (20-22)? What spiritual meaning did it have? How did God treat this vow? Think about how God accepted Jacob’s vow and continued to lead him (31:13, 35:1,14,15).

III. The God of Paddan Aram (29:1-31:55)

  1. How did Jacob meet Rachel, and what agreement did he make with Laban to get Rachel (29:1-20)? How much did Jacob love Rachel? Why did Jacob have to work for Laban seven more years (21-30)? Though Laban cheated him, how did Jacob serve Laban (31:38-42)?

  2. What are the names of Leah and Rachel’s twelve children (29:31-35, 30:1-24, 35:16-18)? What do their names reveal of Leah and Rachel’s problems? Think about Jacob’s marriage life? How did God train Jacob through this, and how was God bringing about his will?

  3. After Jacob had gained love and honor, what was he interested in doing (30:25-30)? How had Jacob become so wealthy (30:31-43, 31:8-12)? Why did Jacob have to leave Haran and return to his homeland (31:1-16)? How did God protect Jacob on his way back (17-55)?
