John 8:1-20

  1. Where did Jesus go after the crowd had left to their homes? (7:53, 8:1) Why? What did Jesus do at the temple courts early in the morning? (2)

  2. At this time, what woman did the religious leaders bring in and make stand before them? (3) According to the Law of Moses, what punishment awaited this woman? (Dt 22:22) Knowing that her adultery would be punishable by stoning, why might she have done it anyway?

  3. What difficult question did they have for Jesus? (4,5) What was their intent? (6a) What was their problem in terms of shepherding the people?

  4. At this point, what did Jesus do? (6b) When they kept questioning him, who did Jesus permit to throw the first stone? (7) Why couldn’t anyone throw a stone at her? (8,9a; Ro 3:10,23)

  5. Who alone could condemn this woman? (9b; Heb 4:15b) And yet, what was Jesus’ grace to this woman? (10,11a) How could Jesus forgive this woman? (1 Pe 2:24) Think about the destructiveness of condemnation and the power of forgiveness. What kind of new life did Jesus tell her she must now lead? (11b)

  6. Who did Jesus claim to be? (12a) What kind of life can those lead who follow Jesus? (12b) Why did the Pharisees say Jesus’ testimony was not valid? (13) Yet, why is Jesus’ testimony valid (14-20)?
