Lesson 23

JESUS GIVES A NEW COMMAND

John 13:1-38

Key Verse: 13:34

  1. How do you think Jesus felt, knowing that his time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father? (1a) What had the devil been doing? (2a) What did Jesus do in this situation? (2b) Why might Judas have been prompted by Satan? (Jn 12:6)

  2. As the evening meal was being served, what did Jesus know about himself? (3) Why might the disciples have come to eat the Passover dinner without washing their feet? (Mk 9:34, 10:41) What did Jesus do for his disciples at that time? (4,5) What do we learn from Jesus here?

  3. What is the reason of Peter’s stubbornly refusing to let Jesus wash his feet? (6-8a) But what would happen if he was not served by Jesus? (8b) Surprised at Jesus’ words, what did Peter request, and why do you think Jesus said that he needed only to wash Peter’s feet? (9-11)

  4. After washing the disciples feet, how did Jesus instruct them? (12-15) Why was it right for the disciples wash one another’s feet? (14) Knowing these things, what would happen if they practiced them? (16,17)

  5. Why did Jesus speak beforehand about his betrayer? (18-20) How might Jesus have felt as he spoke of his betrayer? (21) How little did the disciples know about one another? (22-29)

  6. What did Judas do when his intent had become known? (30) Why do you think he didn’t repent? Why might Jesus have said that he and the Father would be glorified, though his disciples would betray him? (31-33)

  7. What new command did Jesus give his disciples? (34) What might have been Jesus’ intent in giving this command? What distinguishes a disciple of Jesus? (35) How much did Peter love Jesus, and why might Jesus have foretold Peter’s failure? (36-38)
