Study Method

Inductive Bible Study Method

Observe · Interpret · Apply — a three-step method that lets the text speak for itself

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.
Matthew 13:44 (NIV)

Like discovering hidden treasure, this method draws meaning directly from the text — the source of the name IBSTH (Treasure Hunt).

Why This Method

Inductive reasoning withholds the conclusion until observation has done its work. Before leaning on theology, lectures, or pre-digested commentary, we set our preconceptions aside and let the text speak for itself. The aim, in Howard Hendricks' words, is not to make us "smarter sinners" but to make us more like our Lord.

The 3-Step Flow

STEP 1
Observe

What does the text say?

STEP 2
Interpret

What does it mean?

STEP 3
Apply

What does it mean for me?

STEP 1 · Observe

Six Ways to Observe

Read repeatedly

Don't stop after one pass — re-read until the text becomes familiar.

See the big picture

Take a bird's-eye view before zooming in — charts and diagrams help.

Factual Study

Divide the passage into meaningful paragraphs and give each one a title.

Identify the genre

Narrative, poetry, prophecy, epistle — each genre asks to be read differently.

5W1H facts

Who, when, where, what, how, why — collect facts with these six questions.

Five patterns to find

Emphasis · repetition · relation · similarity · contrast — the author's flow of thought emerges.

STEP 2 · Interpret

Five Principles of Interpretation

  1. 1Rely on the illumination of the Holy Spirit
  2. 2Interpret literally, not allegorically or mystically
  3. 3Interpret within the literary context
  4. 4Let Scripture interpret Scripture
  5. 5Interpret with Christ at the center

STEP 3 · Apply

Five Steps of Application

  1. 1
    Examine yourself

Hold yourself up to the text with nine diagnostic questions.

  2. 2
    Plan a concrete action

    Practical, measurable, and achievable.

  3. 3
    Share the plan

Share the resolution with a partner who will struggle alongside you honestly.

  4. 4
    Do it

Agreement and understanding are not enough — actually do it.

  5. 5
    Check the fruit

Habits are stubborn. Look back, learn, and start again.

Five Areas to Examine
Relationship with God
Personal life
Relationships with others
Relationship with the enemy
The world (mission, witness)

Closing

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
